Realty bites the most in consumer courts in Chandigarh

Chandigarh: As many as 83,552 complaints have been filed in consumer courts, including two district forums and state commission, from their inception in 1998 till March 2019 out of which 81,559 have been disposed of with housing topping the list followed by insurance electricity and banking.

Housing-related cases have been capped at 8,260 cases, with 7,747 disposed of in the state commission. The next in the list are insurance cases, 2,130, with 2,085 cleared. Third highest cases have been related to electricity. A total of 1,155 cases had been filed and all disposed of. All cases related to telephony, railways and airline had also been settled.

In the state commission since inception, 22,627 cases have been filed till date, out of which 21,937 have already been disposed of till March 31, 2019.

On the other hand, 60,925 cases have been filed till March 31, 2019, in the two district forum. Out of these, 59,586 have been disposed of. Here insurance-related cases have topped the charts. A total of 5,641 cases have been filed under this category out of which 5,411 have been disposed of.

The authorities at consumer forum pointed out that Chandigarh being one of the most literate cites is also highly consumer-aware. The population of Chandigarh is only 0.09% of the country but the percentage of consumer complaints filed in Chandigarh vis-vis the nation is 17%. The per capita filing is the highest and even the disposal rate of Chandigarh consumer courts is the highest, touching 98%.
